What is a spam score?
It's a rating of how 'spammy' your email looks to filters like SpamAssassin — based on your subject line, content, links, and formatting. The lower the score, the better your chances of landing.

Why is my newsletter going to spam?
Usually a mix of small things: a trigger word in the subject, too many images, a risky link, or weak authentication. We pinpoint the specific reasons and rank them by impact.

How do I test my spam score before sending?
Send the email you're working on to your test address from your email tool, the same way you'd send it to a subscriber. We run it through real spam filters and give you a score plus the three things most worth fixing — in plain English, with rewrites.

My spam score is bad — what do I fix first?
Fix authentication first. If SPF, DKIM or DMARC is missing or misaligned, that's a one-time DNS change, and until it's done it holds the score down no matter how well the email is written. Next, the two things a filter reads directly: the subject line and the links. Trigger wording in the subject, and shortened or mismatched link domains, are both scored against you. Then the balance of images to text — an email that is one large picture with a few words gives a filter almost nothing to read. Change one thing at a time and re-test the same email, so you can see which fix actually moved the number.

What can't a spam score tell you?
Where a specific inbox will file your email. A spam score is one filter's read of one message, and it only sees what's inside the email: authentication, wording, links, formatting. It can't see your sending reputation with that mailbox provider, whether your subscribers open and reply, or how Gmail sorts commercial mail into its Promotions tab. That's why a clean score and a Promotions placement aren't a contradiction. Read the score as 'is this email well built', and treat where it lands as a separate question.

Can an email get a good spam score and still land in Promotions?
Yes — they're two different questions. A spam score asks whether your email looks like spam. Gmail's Promotions tab is a sorting decision about whether it looks commercial: several links, large images, sale-style language, marketing formatting. An email can be clean by the filter's rules and still read as commercial. Promotions isn't the spam folder and people do read it, but if you want Primary, send something that looks more like a letter than a flyer.
